More About Cohasset, Massachusetts
History
Cohasset was first settled in 1670. It was a part of Hingham until its incorporation as a separate town in 1770. It was formally known as Hingham’s Second Parish. Its current name Cohasset was culled from an Algonquian word “Conahasset,” which means “long rocky place” in English.
In 1670, the town was apportioned and divided among the new owners. Cohasset’s rocky nature did not allow for many agricultural endeavors, but up to the 1840s, cod fishing was the main business of the residents. Vessels from the town built of timber grown in Cohasset forests exported fish. Transportation was majorly via the ports until the South shore railroad opened in 1849 with Cohasset as the terminus.
Cohasset is located on the corner of the South Shore, where Boston Harbor ends. The town is in Norfolk County and is currently governed at the local level. It is part of Massachusetts’s 8th congregational district.
