More About Lexington, Massachusetts

History

The first settlement in Lexington, MA, was in 1641. It started out as a farming community and a part of Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1691, It was incorporated as a parish and initially called Cambridge Farms. Lexington was commissioned in 1713 as an individual town. It is a historical town where the battle of Lexington and Concord took place.

The first battle of the American revolutionary war, known as the Battle at Lexington, started in Lexington on the 19th of April 1775. The British Army set out to destroy colonial gunpowder and cannons that were being stored in Concord; the British faced the minutemen of the Lexington militia. The war broke out when a shot was fired, and till today, Lexington recognizes and commemorates this battle on the Battle Green as part of its Patriots day.

After the revolutionary war, Lexington developed while it remained a farming community supplying produce and offering services to neighboring suburbs in Massachusetts. As the town progressed, many of the farms were converted to housing divisions in the 1970s. In the 1960s and 70s, more people began to move to Lexington because of its progression in technology and proximity to Boston.

What to see or do in Lexington MA

The Lexington Common National Historic Site (Lexington Battle Green) is a national landmark. It is the site where the opening shots of the Battle of Lexington and Concord were fired. It is currently a public park. Buckman Tavern was the house where the minutemen waited for the British military forces, and wounded soldiers from the battle were treated in.

The tavern still contains collections of tools and devices from the revolutionary period. It is located opposite the Lexington common. A must-see is the Minuteman statue on the Battle Green, a bronze figure of a colonial farmer with a musket by the sculptor, Henry H. Kitson.

The sculpture was unveiled on the 19th of April 1900, and it depicts Captain John Parker, the leader of Lexington militia in 1775. Another monument on the Battle green is the revolutionary war monument, which marks the end of the line of minutemen that were on parade to confront the British soldiers. It was erected in 1799.
