History
What is now the city of Arlington was settled by European colonists in 1635. A small village within what is now Cambridge was known as Menotomy. The first settlement in Arlington, MA, was in 1635 when it was a part of Cambridge known as Menotomy. It was incorporated as West Cambridge in 1807 and gained its current name in 1867 when the name was changed in honor of the heroes buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Arlington is popular for the historic sites that commemorate the role of the town in the American revolutionary war. Arlington was a refuge for patriot soldiers during the war.
The Jason Russell House, built-in 1740, was the site of a bloody clash known as the Battle of Lexington and the Battle of Concord on April 19, 1775. It was added to the National Register of historic places in 1947. In the 19th century, Arlington served as the food basket feeding the population of Boston with its market gardens.
In 1688, Menotomy’s taxpayers petitioned for the right to build a school, and the first school was completed in 1693. The first free public library in Massachusetts was established in West Cambridge, which is now Arlington. It was once an agricultural and milling town offering milling services to farmers from other surrounding suburbs. Arlington MA progressively grew from a rural community to a respectable residential suburb of Boston.

Arlington MA is home to America’s first children’s library and the historic meat-packing business known as Uncle Sam. The famous Arlington cemetery is located in Virginia; Massachusetts honors those buried there for their years of service and sacrifice. The Jason Russell House, now owned by the historical society, still stands to this day. It contains furnishings from the 18th and 19th centuries.
A monument marks where Russell and Eleven other men were buried after the bloodiest battle of the revolutionary war. Bullet holes from the battle are still visible, and the house serves as a museum, housing collections of the Arlington Historical Society. Another relic is the Old Schwamb Mill, the oldest functional mill in the Western hemisphere. In 1864, it was purchased by the Schwambs as a spice mill and converted to a woodworking mill. Other places of interest include the Cyrus E Dallin Art Museum, Washington Tower, Lowell House, Memorial Hall, and the many theatres located in the suburb.

History
The first settlement in Brookline was in 1638. The town was part of the European colony in Boston and once a part of the Algonquian territory. Brookline was established as an individual county in 1705 on 13th November.
Its name was coined from two small brooks that once bordered the northern and southern parts of the town. The Smelt brook from the North separated it from Brighton, and the Muddy River from the south separated it from Boston. In the early 1670s, Brookline village boomed as a business center. It later developed as a suburb for streetcars, aiding and offering transportation to Boston at cheaper rates. From 1705 to 1873, Brookline developed from a small rural town to a commuting town and continued to gain economic strength in real estate.
Large plots of land were converted to estate homes for the rich folks in Boston, and it soon became a residential area for the elite. The town of Brookline was unique for its picturesque architectures, parks, interconnected roads, and edifices.
It was once said to be the richest town in the world and is currently the richest county in Massachusetts.

The 35th president of the United States, John F. Kennedy, was born and bred in Brookline, MA. His family house, “The John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site,” is located at Beals Street in Brookline. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and is currently owned by the National Park who runs it as a tourist attraction and Historic site.
The Larz Anderson Auto Museum is the oldest collection of vehicles in the US. It was built in 1888, and it exhibits the evolution of automobiles to the present day. Another National Historic Site to see is the Federick Law Olmsted Site. In 1883, Federick Law Olmsted, who is recognized as the Founder of American Landscape architecture, established “Fairsted,” the world’s first full-scale professional office for the practice of landscape design.
